Therefore every new friend is important. Today we were joined by the publishing house “Vaga”. We received several books, but we really would like to emphasize fresh from the printers the 1st volume of K. Marx`s Capital. It reached the bookshops only just before the New Year, so it’s a perfect New Year present for all young philosopher, economists, sociologists and otherwise interested who do not possess the old (published in the Soviet times) edition. By the way, some terms were updated and corrected in this edition, so even those who were using the old one, might find it useful to get this brand new version.

Also we would like to invite all of you to the launch-discussion this Thursday (01.21) 6pm at the Reading Room of the Contemporary Art Centre (CAC) in Vilnius. The panel: the author of the Introduction for this edition economist prof. J. Čičinskas, philosopher dr. A. Bielskis, and the chief executive of “Vaga” V. Petrošius. The topic of discussion: “Does Lithuania need K. Marx’s Capital?” By the way, we have insider information that at the launch the book will be going with a 25% discount. Do come – we will definitely be there.

And here are all the books from “Vaga” (thanks again):

B. Dupré 50 filosofijos idėjų, kurias privalu žinoti (Vaga, 2009)

S. Freud Psichoanalizės įvadas. Paskaitos (Vaga, 2009)

E. Fromm Žmogaus destruktyvumo anatomija (Vaga, 2008, t. 1-2)

Big thanks to them as to all those whose books will enrich our shelves. We’ve already piled up almost 300 titles.

- – -

A few weeks back we asked who is the prototype of Borat. The winner is Mindaugas Bundza who correctly pointed out that the deputy of the director of Lithuanian Institute of History Grigorijus Koniuchovas is remarkably similar to the well-known character of the film. We do not know if the creators of “Borat” had read the dissertation of Aurimas Švedas, but we are sure that Mr. Koniuchovas would win a Borat look-a-like contest. The publishers “Aidai” reward Mindaugas Bundza with a bibliographical rarity – a special numbered edition of A. Švedas` “Matricos nelaisvėje” with an autograph by the author. Here’s how the author himself describes the book:

It’s a unique book, that was borne out of striving to go further than the rules of the postmodern play in text would permit. It calls not read, but to experience. The second version of “Matricos nelaisvėje” shows the prison of mind, created in the Soviet times, from different perspective.

Congratulations!

- – -

And, finally, some numbers: 13254,9 Lt in the bank account, 283 book titles, bunches of new friends, ordered shelves, provided premises, ordering new books. There’s still a lot of work to be done – we will, of course, announce everything here.

All this would be impossible without you – therefore once again and again and again we say thank you, best wishes for the New Year and we wish all of us to learn to dream – for now we know that dreams come true, don’t we?…

Because publicus also means “public”.”

And also we remembered Martin Luther who put up 95 theses on the door of the church in his town for public deliberation.

Precisely for this reason today on the door of our Department we “nail” 99 names of philosophers for public discussion. In our opinion, all the texts of these individuals are categorically and absolutely obligatory for the self-respecting academic library of philosophy.

We “nail” their names as a vision first of all for ourselves and treat them as a point of departure for the long work the fulfilment of which we regard as our point of honor. And it does not really matter how long it will take.

And yes, we understand that this (or any similar) list is unavoidably subjective. That’s why our list has only 99, and not 100, names. We’ve left one symbolic place for those, whom we forgot, did not understand, or did not value enough. Maybe you know one? Spill it out – let’s discuss.

600 BCE

1. Pythagoras

500 BCE

2. Democritus

The question was when. Now we know – today! NOW! It’s thanks to all of you that today we can celebrate. It’s thanks to all of you that today we have won. It is thanks to all of you that today we could send this letter to the Rector:

Dear Rector,

We hardly ourselves can believe what happened, but we’ve won.

www.100×100.lt

Sincerely Yours,

The Community of the Department of Philosophy

- – -

We are grateful to those who joined us on Facebook.

We are grateful to those who supported us with books.

But most of all we are grateful to our patrons – those, who believed in us and our dream, those, who in the comments like freemasons mysteriously confessed “I’m already in. Good luck.”, those, whose names are spelled out here, and those, who preferred to remain unnamed. To all of you we can only once again repeat the phrase that we kept repeating throughout these two and a half weeks: “Thanks, it’s important to us.” As a sign of gratitude, as promised, a cup of beloved by Voltaire mocha is waiting for you at Coffee Inn. You can get it at any time between this Thursday (12.15) and the New Year at Vilnius st. 17, Vilnius, or Laisvės ave. 72, Kaunas. Just have an ID with you – the barristas of Coffee Inn will take care of the rest.

And, what’s next? It is clear that till the New Year we will not be ordering the marble plate with the names of the patrons, so if you still want to be immortalized at the future forge of philosophers, you can do so till 31st of December. And we in the meantime are hurriedly browsing amazon.com and abebooks.com – we will let you know about all the shopping here. And – thanks again.

It’s “Kitos knygos” (Other Books), probably the only one, trying to fill in the void of contemporary left texts in Lithuania, and also the publisher of Kurt Vonnegut and Charles Bukowski in Lithuanian. We are really grateful, and on the planned to publish list seeing such authors as Baudrillard, Marcuse, Chomsky, we are really anxious to see them on the bookshelves. Here’s the full list of the presents:

J. Bakan Korporacija: patologiškas pelno ir galios siekimas

G. Bataille Dangaus žydrynė

A. Brener/B. Schurz Ką daryti? 54 kultūrinio pasipriešinimo valdžiai technologijos vėlyvojo kapitalizmo epochoje

N. Chomsky Tikslai ir vizijos

S. Home Kultūros antpuolis: utopinės srovės nuo letrizmo iki “klasių kovos”

N. Klein Šoko doktrina: katastrofų kapitalizmo iškilimas

Demokratija be darbo judėjimo?, sud. A. Bielskis

The famous work of Isaac Newton Philosophia naturalis principia mathematica for the first time was published in Latin in 1687, and in Lithuanian – in 1986 in the volume Filosofijos istorijos chrestomatija (albeit, not all). During that time both editions became bibliographical rarities. We still have to wait for the Latin version, but the Lithuanian one we already have! As even a bigger rarity: I. Kant’s Praktinio proto kritika, in 1987 splendidly translated into Lithuanian by the patriarch of Lithuanian logic Romanas Plečkaitis (who, sadly, passed away earlier this year). We already were knocking on the doors of some publishing house, asking to republish it. Now we are saying: no need. We already have it!
